Worship Matters Chapter 28-32

This was 50 pages of reading, so I'm going to keep the summaries short.  In chapter 28, Kauflin talks about relationships and people.  God uses our relational conflicts to make us more like his Son.  It is important to be with others because they can see what sins you can't see, their contributions make worship better, and God encourages us when relationships are messy.  In chapter 29, Kauflin talks about the church.  Leading worship to a big group of people is bound to bring up disagreements.  Not everyone will like how you lead and will criticize you for it.  Others will love it and compliment it.  Whatever their opinion is, it is important to pray for them.  Also, take their compliments as encouragement and their criticism as a valuable correction. In chapter 30, Kauflin gives us five ways to help a worship team.  Establish your team with roles and standards, encourage your team, equip your team with the right skills, evaluate your team to establish a culture of humility, and enjoy your team. In chapter 31, Kauflin talks about how to interact with your pastor.  It is important to serve and listen to him.  If you disagree, stay or move on with your faith.  In chapter 32, Kauflin gives advice to pastors about how to pick the right worship leader.

There was a lot of valuable information in this part of the book.  The part that stood out to me the most was the advice to a worship team.  We have established our roles and standards, and we are equipped with the right skills.  I just think we need to work on encouraging and evaluating each other more.  I feel like we are too nice and if someone does something wrong, we feel like we can't say anything about it.  Conversation is key though.  If we talk through the mistakes and shortcomings in a mature conversation and not bossing each other around, I feel like we'd grow a lot as a team.  Lastly, it is important to enjoy the team.  We are graduating soon, so this hit me hard.  Will miss my worship team a lot.

Worship Matters Chapter 11

Worship and God's word are not separate entities.  They are one.  Every meeting should be characterized by the Spirit's presence and God's word.  The spirit is what inspired God's word, so we should incorporate it into our worship.  We can do this by treasuring, singing, reading, showing and praying God's word.  When we treasure God's word, other people will know it.  Lyrics matter more than the tunes, so we should understand the lyrics we are singing to convey the word more.  Lastly we should obviously read it in order to show it and pray it. Being raised as Christians, it feels sometimes that reading the word has become a chore.  When chapel speakers throw lines of verse on the screen and start reading it, I unfortunately feel my eyes glaze over, zoning out to the max.  It really shouldn't be this way, and I know it.  In order to be a true worship band, we should exude the Word too.  Read it, pray it, sing it, and show it.

Chapter 17

The Spirit of God works to transform us into the image of Jesus.  This is especially prevalent while we behold God's glory.  Kauflin describes six ways that worshipping God can and should transform the way we live our lives.  Worshipping God should make us humble, secure, grateful, holy, loving, and mission-minded.  The phrase "Genuine worship is life changing" is true, and it should dramatically impact how we lead worship.  It gives worship a whole new meaning with its implications and a mission for us to carry out.  When we glorify God through worship, He works in us to his will.  While we worship, the joy is ours, but the glory is His. I felt like I really needed this chapter right now during this time in my life.  As senioritis kicks in, motivation to work hard has truly left me, as life somehow got more stressful and crazy.  But this chapter reminded me that genuine worship is life changing.  I, myself, may not be able to lea...

Chapter 14

One of the greatest challenges a worship leader can face is trying to lead an unaffected and disinterested crowd.  There are three ways not to do while trying to lead this audience.  First, we should not demand that people worship God .  Second, we should not manipulate people into worshipping through things like insincere emotion or mysticism.  Third, we shouldn't make the audience feel guilty.  If the people are not motivated to worship, it is not the worship team's fault.  It is up to the audience themselves.  We cannot force and motivate the crowd to worship, but we can make it easier for them to.  Leading by example is important.  Singing along when possible and not seeming like we are absorbed into the music can be helpful.      The student body is hard to motivate to worship unless we play their favorite songs.  But it is not up to us to make them worship.  It's only up to God to lift people...
